finally got a decent camera for a beginner - an "slr" called the Canon EOS Rebel XSI. I already realize I need to figure out how to hike up the shutter speed and will need a faster lens as well to keep action shots clear instead of blurry. I will mainly be photographing people and specifically my children - who are young and do not stay still for one moment.
